Did you know the ceiling fans in your home can spin in two different directions? There’s a reason they have this feature – the direction the fan blades spin affects the circulation of air in each room and the overall climate efficiency of your home.
If you haven’t checked before, look at the direction the fan blades are moving. Are they spinning clockwise or counter clockwise?
Clockwise: When the blades are spinning in a clockwise direction, the fan is helpful to circulate air up by the ceiling back down to the rest of the room. You want your fans spinning like this during the winter to help circulate the warm air that collects up by the ceiling.
Counterclockwise: When the blades are spinning in a counterclockwise direction, the blades are helping push cool air to the ground and make the room feel colder. This is helpful in the summer when you want to increase air movement.
To change the direction of your ceiling fan, most models have a black switch on the motor assembly that toggles to switch the spin direction. If you have a fan with a remote, it may have an option directly on the control pad. If you need to use a ladder to get up to the fan, be careful and have someone else assist you.
As we approach spring, add this list to your list of to-dos! It’s an important tip to keep in mind when the weather changes.
