This summer has been hot AND humid — that takes a toll on your comfort and your energy bill. But lets get ahead of it! Here are five tips you can do to keep your home cooler without cranking the AC non-stop.
Start with your filters. If your home has central air, check the HVAC filter monthly. You’ll see a buildup of dust (and maybe even clumps of hair if you have pets) on the filter, but another symptom is dust buildup on the air vents around your home. In either case, make sure to replace it! A clean filter helps your system run more efficiently and improves your indoor air quality.
Use your fans the right way. If you didn’t know, most ceiling fans have a switch on the motor that can change the direction that the blades spin. Make sure to set the switch to spin the fan counterclockwise in the summer. This pushes cool air down and creates a wind-chill effect that makes the room feel cooler!
Block the heat. Keep blinds or curtains closed during the hottest parts of the day — especially on south- and west-facing windows. Blackout curtains especially can make a big difference in keeping rooms cooler.
Seal in the cool air. Drafts don’t just let cold air in during winter—they let your cool air out during summer, too. Doors and windows are the place to check for unwanted airflow—if you notice cool air seeping out, we’d recommend sealing any gaps as soon as possible. The weatherstripping on exterior doors eventually fails and shrinks, as well as the caulk sealing your windows – make sure to keep an eye on them, or give us a call and we can take a look for you.
Don’t forget the attic. Poor insulation or ventilation up there can make your AC work overtime. If the attic feels like an oven, it might be time to look into improving airflow or insulation.
Bonus tip: If you’re away from home during the day, bump your thermostat up 7–10°F to save on cooling costs.
A few quick checks now can help your home stay cooler, your energy bill stay lower, and your summer be a little more comfortable. Give us a call if you have any questions—we’d love to help you keep your home in great shape this season!
